How prepared are you, your family and your neighbors for when a disaster strikes? Are you aware that it could take days or weeks before emergency personnel might reach you after a disaster?!?! Do you have an emergency supply kit, an emergency communications plan and are you aware of the potential emergencies that could occur where you live and the appropriate way to respond to them? South King Fire & Rescue and the Des Moines Police Department have partnered to assist neighborhoods with organizing residents to be ready to take care of themselves and each other after a disaster. Starting a Neighborhood Emergency Team (NET) in your neighborhood will ensure that you, your family, and your neighbors are prepared and have a plan for when a disaster occurs. The free classes include Personal & Household Preparedness, Neighborhood Disaster Planning, a Neighborhood Walkabout (to identify neighborhood concerns), and a Team Drill. The December 2006 windstorm was a natural disaster of historic proportions, which caused extensive damage to the Puget Sound region. The storm produced hurricane-force wind gusts and heavy rainfall, causing hundreds of millions of dollars in damage and leaving over 1.8 million residences and businesses without power for several days. The good news is there is STILL time to prepare before another disaster occurs but you need to start NOW. |
